2016 kidding season has come to a close. This is by far my favorite time on the farm, but also one of the most stressful. We are thankful to have gotten through another year without any major kidding problems, there were no kid or doe losses. Praise God. Here is the run down: and a few pics. :)
Of 7 kiddings, we had 17 kids born. 13 were doe kids, 4 were buck kids. We kept 7 of the does for our herd and the rest found new homes. Our naming theme this year is lakes of Crow Wing and Cass Counties. Registration has come back on all but the newest, and they are Edna, Ada, Sassy, Bertha, Ruth, Markee, and Pepin. There was one stray in there, Sassy, because of my naming helpers. ;)
Our oldest doe, Lexus, kicked off the season in early February with triplet doe kids. One of these kids went to Four Seasons Farm, in Jordan MN, where Lexus, and several of my other does came from.
Second to go was Michelle. Michelle is a Nubian/Lamancha cross (the lack of ears is standard in Lamanchas) She also kidded triplet does. These three babes headed to Wisconsin to join another goat dairy operation, and Michelle left shortly after to be a milk goat for another farmer.
Marshmallow was the overachiever this year. She kidded quads mid February. Two does and two bucks. Both does were retained. Marshmallow is our favorite milker, so I am thrilled to get more of her genetics on the farm.
Fourth to go was a surprise kidding from Cedar. One of our yearling does. We were thankful for warm weather because she kidded outside and had a large single doe kid. Talk about a whoops! Mom and babe are both healthy and doing well. This little lady is Bertha.
Following Cedar was a February 22nd kidding from Amber. She had twins. Both does! We kept one, her name is Markee.
After Amber, we had a long break until May. There was another surprise kidding from a yearling doe, Willow. (These surprise kiddings are what we got for not having really sturdy fencing up prior to winter!) She had a single buck kid. This was only buck no. 3!
Last kidding for 2016 was May 9th from Citrine. She went out with a bang. Triplets! A buck and two does. We will retain one of the does to join our herd. She will be named Pepin.
Now we watch as the kids grow and change. Planning for next year's kids is already in the works. :)
